CHEER UPDATE FOR 2018

 

Welcome to MAA Cheer!  I wanted to formally introduce myself as the new Cheer Director.  My name is Courtney King and I am married with 4 kids, two boys and twin girls that are MAA cheerleaders *\o/*!  I am so excited to build upon all the hard work past directors have put into this organization.  I’m looking forward to our upcoming season and to meet each and every one of the girls.  My goals for this year are to welcome back many familiar faces and introduce new faces to the wonderful sport of cheerleading.  I want to teach and build upon the fundamentals of the sport in a safe environment, all while having fun and making memories and new friends. 
 
Thank you all for supporting our wonderful program.  This year we have 92 cheerleaders registered!! 
 
Sadly, at this time we do not have enough Seniors to make a squad this year.  With the new rules being placed we can not fairly combine squads for competitions. There is still time however- until fitting night.  If you have signed up your child as a Senior, we need at least 6 more girls to make a squad.  Tell them to tell their friends or we can discuss other options.

Now for a bit of business – 
 
After going through our uniforms in storage and holding our buy-back night for those girls not returning to MAA cheer, it became clear that there would be a need for many girls to purchase new uniforms this year.  I have been in contact with our Varsity representative for some time and was given an approximation of cost for purchases of new uniforms. Unfortunately, when speaking to Varsity right before the Memorial Day weekend to confirm pricing for our uniform in preparation of fitting night, I was told some unfortunate news.  Varsity is phasing out our current uniforms this year and because of that, any new uniforms that would need to be purchased would cost roughly $200.  Additionally, next season we would no longer be able to purchase that uniform at all, so we would be forced to change uniforms.  The MAA organization’s plan was to move to new uniforms next year, but with this recent information it makes better sense to make that move this year.  $200 for a new uniform that would only be used one season just doesn’t make the best economic sense for the majority of our cheerleading families.  I am in contact with several different companies in order to come up with a new look for our team at a reasonable price.  While I don’t have those options and prices readily available just yet, I wanted to get this information out to you as soon as possible.  Once I finalize the uniform and cost, I’ll share that information. I do understand that several families have been planning on reusing a uniform from last year. I am truly sorry for the last minute change and any inconvenience this may have caused. It was a shock to me as well.
 
Additionally, we’re looking to offer a bookbag option as opposed to the duffel bag offered in past years as an optional purchase.  We will also be offering spirit wear and decals to purchase at the beginning of the season.
 
 
    ***Exciting news!  The Sweet Frog Mobile truck will be at fitting night!!  A percentage of sales goes back to MAA.  $5 for a small and $7 for a large cup.  The truck is peanut and walnut free with a dairy free      
        option***

Registration

 

Cheerleading registrations will be conducted only through the MAA Website.

The registration period will open on MAY 1st and end on MAY 31st.  When a team reaches capacity, registration will be closed for that team.  Space tends to fill quickly, so register early.

 

You can register online at http://www.maasports.net/.  In addition, you will need to complete the following forms, print them out and mail them to me with a copy of your child’s birth certificate (only if this is your first year). You may also turn in completed forms at walk up registration night or the fitting night.

Eligibility: Registration is open to all athletes, and is not limited to the Watkins Elementary School attendance boundaries. We offer cheerleading for football season only.

 

Age requirements for football cheering: 5-14 years old with age being determined as of 9/30 of current year for flag, minor, junior and senior cheerleaders who are not aging out. Age for seniors cheering during their last year of eligibility will be determined as of 12/31 of current year.

 

 

Important Dates:

 

**Please mark your calendars with the following VERY important dates**

 

 

  • June 7th: Fitting night. Held in the JB Watkins Cafeteria, this is a chance to try on and be fitted for our new uniform, and be sized for all items needed for the year (tshirt, shorts, warmups). It is mandatory that all athletes stop by the fitting at some point from 6:00-7:30.

 

  • Saturday, August 4th: Mandatory stunt clinic at Fame All-Star Cheer Gym

                  Flag: 9-11

                  Minors, Juniors, Seniors: 9-1

 

  • Competition choreography will be the week of August 6 from 5:30pm-8:00pm.  Which night will be settled shortly by team.  

 

  • We will also have one tumble night a week at FAME starting in August for $45 per month.

Cost:

 

Registration is $180 and includes practice wear, team bow, pink bow for October, competition fees, stunting camp, and more. Uniforms cost is additional and based on individual need.

 

Uniform Fees:

 

Uniforms are purchased through Varsity Brands at an additional cost outside of registration.  We are getting new uniforms this year, you will need to be fitted by the uniform rep at our fitting night.  Warm ups are provided to each athlete with a $60 deposit that will be refunded upon return of the warm ups in the proper condition at the end of the season. All athletes will be fitted for these this night as well. Socks and shoes are to be purchased independently through one of several vendors provided at registration.

 

 

Coaches: Coaches are selected by the Cheerleading Director. All coaches undergo background checks and safety training prior to starting the season.


Season: Pre-season practice for all squads begins in late July learning cheers and stunting technique. The season (sideline and competition) extends through the end of October.  All squads will cheer on the sidelines of their respective team’s football game and perform at halftime.  Athletes will have the opportunity to compete in several cheer competitions in addition to cheering at football games and performing at halftime. It is optional to participate in competition and athletes must commit to mandatory practice attendances. Athletes may choose to opt out of competition. All information will be presented at the parent meeting at the beginning of the season.

 

 

Practice: Each squad will have practice time around the track behind Midlothian Middle School from 6-8 pm Tuesday and Thursday  through the end of September. Flag typically ends around 7:30 once school starts. Starting in October we move to closed practices indoors to the Midlothian Middle School gym. Additional practice times may be required for competition squads. 


Fundraising: Cheerleaders may be asked to participate in fundraising events to support costs for gym time and competition fees.


Post Season Play: Both conference winners and the six (6) teams with the next best records enter the playoffs in each division, Northern and Southern. The playoffs are single elimination and culminate with the “Superbowl” on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. There is no post season play in the Flag league. Cheerleading squads normally continue cheering as long as their associated team continues in the playoffs.


Pictures: Team and individual pictures will be taken about mid-season and may be purchased for an additional charge.

 


Games: Games begin the weekend after Labor Day (the Saturday after school begins). Games are played on Saturday mornings or afternoons. The Chesterfield Quarterback League sets the schedule and MAA has no control over when it is published, or any changes due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Occasionally, a Wednesday night game will be played, usually as a weather make up. On Saturday mornings, Flag begin at 9:00 AM followed by Minors at 10:00 AM, Juniors at 11:00 AM and Seniors at 12:00 noon. However, the actual starting times depend on the ending time of the previous game. For Saturday evening games, Flag plays at 5:00 PM followed by Minors, Juniors and Seniors in order.
